Saturday, June 14th – What’s Happening Around Atlanta?

Posted OnJun 14, 2014

Hello and happy Saturday! I hope you all are having a great weekend so far. Here is what’s going on today:

World Cup stuff

Colombia vs Greece at 12pm
Uruguay vs Costa Rica at 3pm
England vs Italy at 6pm
Côte d’Ivoire vs Japan at 9pm

The Music Room (327 Edgewood) is showing the England game starting at 5pm and serving a full English menu featuring fish and chips, pie and mash, sausage rolls, and pizza, starting at 5pm.

Check the ATLToDo World Cup 2014 viewing guide for the best places to watch all the matches, updated daily as I find more deals!

Food stuff

Red Brick Brewing (2323 Defoor HIlls Road) has the Summer Brewfest 2014 today from 1-6pm, feturing all the red brick beers as well as “beermosas” and a green tea infused IPA. Tickets are $40+.

Brookhaven Beer Festival is at Apple Valley Road today at 3pm, featuring over 150 beers, live music, a DJ, food, and World Cup viewing screens. Strictly 21+

The Wrecking Bar Brewpub (292 Moreland Ave) is celebrating their third anniversary with a party! The first 50 people today (and Sunday) will receive a free Belgian beer glass with the Wrecking Bar logo engraved on it, and there’s 36 different beers that they’ll be serving. Get the french fries, they’re amazing!

Comedy stuff

Dad’s Garage (1105 Euclid Ave) has the second weekend of their first one-woman show called What’s Wrong With You? by Amber Nash. 8pm, tickets are $13. Repeat performances tomorrow and Saturday night, as well as next weekend. Amber voices Pam from Archer! I went last night and it was really entertaining, especially if you’re an Archer fan I’d recommend seeing this before it closes next weekend!

The Laughing Skull Lounge (878 Peachtree Street) has the Best of Atlanta Showcase tonight at 8 and again at 10pm, tickets are !$20 at the door.

Art stuff

The Goat Farm Arts Center (1200 Foster St) has Synaesthesia II: Color Tone Drone Orchestra performing music conducted by five globes of colored light. I’d be lying if I said I understood what this was 100% but there’s a theremin and it’s only $10 at the door so it sounds cool.

7 Stages (1105 Euclid) has Exposed: Humanity in Motion tonight at 7 and running through the 15th, it’s a contemporary circus show that looks at the different aspects of emotion and experience, an all-aerial contemporary circus show. Tonight at 7pm and all weekend long with afternoon and evening shows. Check the link for full details.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (75 Bennett St) has The Creative Process Through the Exquisite Corpse today at 1pm, the event invites participants to collaborate with Erin and Angus using mixed media techniques to create exquisite corpse drawings. This workshop will include an introduction to famous Surrealists. $20 tickets (free for MOCA members).

The Center for Puppetry Arts (1404 Spring St) has Smackdown: Puppetry vs Animation at 7pm this evening, a live screening event decided by popular choice. Are you Team Yoda or Team Smeagol?

Outside stuff

The Global Reddit Meetup Day is today and /r/Atlanta is meeting in Piedmont Parkfor a cookout in the pavilion! Bring food, drinks, fun stuff, whatever, and meet everyone from /r/Atlanta! I think there are plans to go somewhere afterwards for the England match. All ages, dog friendly, starts at 12.

Old Fourth Ward Skatepark has the closing festival for the Atlanta Cycling Festival at 6pm, with a bike-in movie! The movie is Premium Rish, there’s also New Belgium beer, food from the Nectar Food Truck, raffles, an inflatable twister board, and more!

Candler Park has the annual Big Ass Water-Balloon Fight at 2pm, rain or shine, some balloons will be provided but bring extra. King of Pops will be there!

The Lane (1100 Howell Mill Rd) has the Dirty South Yoga Fest today at 2pm, an afternoon of yoga, music, a farmer’s market, and local beers. The event benefits the charity Centering Youth

Music Festival

The IMR Indie Music Festival continues tonight at The Basement, tickets are $10 for tonight, $12 at the door, or $35 for tonight through Sunday’s acts include Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun, Wordsmith, Lines In The Sky, and more. The guys have partnered with Reddit and offered a discount checkout code!

Historic Oakland Cemetary presents the Tunes from the Tombs all-day music festival featuring all genres of music. Tickets are $10 online or $15 at the gate, check the link for full lineup details.

Regular Saturday Stuff:

    Fun Stuff

  • Starlight 6 Drive-In has a flea market at 7:30 am. Note: this event is not rain or shine.
  • High Museum has free admission for Fulton county residents (bring your drivers licence) before 1pm, on the first Saturday of the month.
  • Lake Claire Land Trust has a drum circle the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 8pm-midnight. Fun to watch if the weather is nice, but the land trust is dry so no alcohol is allowed.
  • Village Theater does Improv-A-Hole, “a college drinking game, mixed with a live-made-up-on-the-spot comedy show.” Starts at 8:30, and there’s a $10 cover.
  • Noni’s over at Edgewood has an indie/electro/house party called Nonsense, “the hippest night in the city” according to CL. 21+, no cover, and it’s every other Saturday.

    Farmer’s Markets

  • The Green Market is in Piedmont Park. 9am-1pm, and King of Pops is usually there until 12!
  • Decatur Farmers Market is open from 10am-1pm
  • The Freedom Farmer’s Market (453 Freedom Parkway) is open from 9am-1pm. They usually have a local chef in a pop-up restaurant cooking food for you while you shop!
