Friday, June 27th – What’s Happening Around Atlanta?

Posted OnJun 27, 2014

What’s happening around Atlanta today? Read through for information on food, art, comedy, and other events around the city.

#SaveWRAS Damn The Man, Save the Radio is at Diesel Filling Station (870 North Highland) today at 9pm.

They’ll be spinning classic WRAS tunes as well as collecting funds for the legal filings against GSU/GPB and everything else needed. Stop by, it’s really important! If you are unaware of the action being taken against students at GSU by their administration and GPB, head over to savewras.com to learn more.

Art

SaltWorks Contemporary Art (1100 Howell Mill Road) is opening their new exhibit Patterns of Protest by Alejandro Aguilera tonight at 7pm, $4 entry is a donation to Theatre du Reve.

The Old Fourth Art Walk is today at 6pm, covering the art of five Studioplex galleries.

Comedy

The Warren City Club (818 North Highland Ave NE) has the PostModern Collapse Sketch Comedy tonight at 8pm, “Atlanta’s most rugged sketch comedy show.” $10 admission, cash only.

7 Stages Theater (1105 Euclid) hosts Dad’s Garage: Good vs Evil improv competition, an improv battle between God and the Devil. 10:30pm, $14 tickets.

Performance

The Big House on Ponce (368 Ponce) has The Emperor and the Moon tonight at 9pm, an extravaganza combining theater, music, and dance, with puppets and clowns. Tickets are $10 at the door, and it runs until Sunday.

Skwhirlhaus (327 Sisson Ave) has Galatea tonight at 9pm, “An interactive wireless electromyography suit creates the soundtrack as performers move and rest in this re-imagining of the ancient Galatea/Pygmalion myth.” This sounds really cool, there’s a repeat performance tomorrow if you miss it tonight.

7 Stages Theatre (1105 Euclid Ave) has the Apprentice Corporation Tour show tonight at 8pm, tickets are $12 for “A dynamic contemporary dance performance that highlights the passionate voices of Moving in the Spirit’s teen artists and their vision for a better world.”

Other Stuff

The 48 Hour Film Project starts today at 6pm! It might be too late to start your own team, but you can get excited about the screenings of the finished projects on the 7th-10th of July!

Critical Mass is tonight at 6, meeting at Woodruff Park (91 Peachtree Street) and embarking on a 10-15 mile group bike ride! Get out and meet your fellow Atlanta bikers!

Dancing

The Music Room (327 Edgewood) just got a facelift! Go and see it tonight for Death From Below, the monthly indie dance party! Doors at 10pm, no cover.

Octane Coffee (1009 Marietta St) has June Free Spin tonight at 9pm, funk/soul/disco tracks being spun entirely on vinyl in the coolest coffee shop/bar around! No cover.

Terminal West (887 West Marietta St) has Ill Gates performing at 10pm, $15 cover.

Regular Friday Stuff:

    Food & Drinks

  • Hand in Hand off of N. Highland in Virginia Highlands has $2 burgers all day. 21+ once it gets dark.
  • Jack’s Pizza has $4.44 slice of pizza + 40oz beer, all day. Jack’s has an interesting atmosphere…you never really know what to expect. But if you are looking for an original and maybe even crazy slice of pizza, this bar off Highland Avenue is the place for you.

    Fun Stuff

  • Fernbank has Martinis & IMAX from 6:30 every Friday, tickets are $12. On the first Friday of every month there’s also live local funk music, and on 3rd Friday of the month there are salsa dancing lessons going on as well, all for the price of your $12 ticket, so definitely go on the 1st or 3rd.
  • Castleberry Hill Art Stroll is a nice self-guided tour of all the galleries down in Castleberry Hill, and happens every 2nd Friday of the month, from 7pm-10pm.
  • High Museum has Jazz Fridays every third Friday of the month, “an evening of art and music” that they keep the museum open extra hours for. Free with museum ticket.
